Doug Dillard will be a panel speaker on August 18 to discuss “Referendums & Real Estate,” an event sponsored by Atlanta’s Urban Land Institute. At the polls this November we’ll decide the presidential election and vote on Fulton County TSPLOST, City of Atlanta TSPLOST and a ½-cent sales tax for transit expansion in the City of Atlanta. ULI’s Referendums & Real Estate discussion on Aug. 18 will explore each ballot initiative, how they work, goals and other key aspects including implications and possibilities for land use, real estate and regional growth. MARTA Honors Pursley for 42 Years of Legal Service

The Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority issued a resolution earlier this month to thank Charles Pursley Jr. for serving 42 years as its outside legal counsel. Hired in 1974 for his experience in condemnation and eminent domain, Pursley has helped MARTA acquire the land necessary for expanding the footprint of Atlanta’s rail system. In 1984, Pursley became General Counsel, the primary legal advisor to the Board, a role he held until earlier this year.

“I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the evolution of public transportation in Atlanta working with MARTA,” says Pursley. “Together with MARTA’s in-house legal team, our common goal during the past four decades has always been to help make MARTA the best transit system it can be.”

During a celebration in Pursley’s honor, the board issued the resolution recognizing Pursley and announced plans to name a future MARTA rail car after him. Pursley Friese Torgrimson continues to serve as condemnation and eminent domain legal counsel to MARTA.

Pursley Teaches Next Generation of Eminent Domain Lawyers

GA State College of LawPartner Charles Pursley served as a guest lecturer during a recent Eminent Domain class at Georgia State University College of Law. Charles talked with the law students about valuation of real property during a condemnation proceeding. Sharing examples from working with various clients including MARTA, Charles dissected the concept of just and adequate compensation and shared his article, “Eminent Domain: Condemnee’s Perspective on Methods of Acquisition and Valuation Issues.

Papera Helps ULI Counsel Friends of Little Five Points

FOLFPAs a member of the ULI Center for Leadership Class of 2016, Partner Lou Papera and several other members of the class recently worked on a mini-technical assistance program (mTAP) with the Friends of Little Five Points Park organization to review and address a land use issue in the Little Five Points community. The effort involved a formal presentation to Friends of Little Five Points Park at the Horizon Theatre on May 3 on the future of Findley Plaza and the surrounding area. The organization, which focuses on transforming public spaces in Little Five Points, expects to take the findings and recommendations prepared by the mTAP group to City Councilman Kwanza Hall for consideration.
